The Northeast Kingdom Energy Fair drew a big turnout on Saturday, March 27th. Over 800 people from Vermont and New Hampshire passed through the gymnasium at Lyndon State College to talk with exhibitors and receive energy information from experts representing geothermal, solar, residential wind and biomass industries. In its second year, the popular event provided something of interest for everyone: pellet stoves, hybrid vehicles, electric bicycles, bio diesel fuel and information on weatherization, energy efficiency, green building, home energy audits, tax credits and low interest loans for home and business energy improvements. Large trailers parked outside the main entrance featured solar and bioheat exhibits allowing attendees to observe renewable energy demonstrations on site.
In addition to the educational experience offered at each of the 45 exhibits, twelve seminars were held throughout the day featuring a variety of energy topics ranging from Washington Electric’s presentation on generating power at the Coventry Landfill, to a slide show with useful information about proposed changes to Vermont’s energy code for residential construction.
Pubic interest in weatherization and residential energy efficiency improvements remains high in 2010. Homeowners are eager for information about home energy audits to evaluate heating deficiencies and energy loss through windows, doors, basements and attics. A trained energy auditor can provide 1) a detailed analysis of where energy waste is greatest, 2) suggestions for home improvements to reduce the loss, and 3) a prioritized list of the most cost effective measures.
US Senator Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch spent over two hours walking through the exhibit hall to talk with vendors and the public about proposed legislation that will provide incentives for homeowners to invest in energy efficiency. Vermont’s representatives reinforced their commitment to renewable energy and energy conservation – and explained the potential for job creation, energy savings, and the lasting effect of reducing our dependency on carbon-based fuels.
Plans are already underway for NVDA to sponsor another Northeast Kingdom Energy Fair on March 26, 2011. Save the date!
