Flood Hazard Regulation Resources

Flooding is the most prevalent form of natural disaster in Vermont. In our region, floods have destroyed public and private property, damaged critical facilities, rendered roads and bridges impassable, and resulted in fatalities. While Vermont does regulate some larger developments, most of the power protecting the health, safety, and welfare of people is given to municipalities through statute. Your municipality is responsible for planning and regulating land and water to keep people and investments safe.

This work, made possible through the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) funding, and partnership with the Northern Vermont Economic District, Lamoille Regional Planning Commission, Northeastern Vermont Development Association, and Northwest Regional .Planning Commission, uses the most current data available and analyzes mitigation potential at specific community-selected sites along the Lamoille River. This presentation is highly informative and describes how we might utilize the hydraulic model to mitigate future flood impacts through a watershed-level approach.
